The Different Types of Encoding GSM-7 Encoding This is the most commonly used encoding for messages with the GSM 03.38 character set. All GSM handsets and network elements support the 7-bit GSM alphabet. The basic GSM character set contains letters from A to Z (upper and lower case), digits, special symbols, and several Greek alphabet symbols. Some characters in the GSM-7 extension table can only be used at the cost of two characters — these are called “escape characters.” The standard GSM-7 character set uses a 7-bit alphabetic encoding, but escape characters require 14 bits to encode, thus occupying two character slots. The latest Unicode symbol list contains more than 120,000 characters from several symbol sets and 129 modern and historical scripts. Compared to the GSM character set, Unicode encoding supports a wide range of languages and symbols. However, if your message text contains a symbol that is not in the 7-bit alphabet, you will need to use UCS-2 encoding. While this encoding type allows the use of Unicode characters, it is much heavier, which means the maximum number of characters is reduced to 70. One SMS equals a maximum of 160 characters, and from the second SMS onward, the maximum is 153 characters per SMS. UNICODE uses 16 bits to encode each character, enabling the use of more complex characters and emojis. One SMS equals a maximum of 70 characters, and from the second SMS onward, the maximum is 67 characters per SMS. Count the Number of Characters in Your SMS This can be very useful since certain factors differ depending on the encoding chosen. As a standard, when using GSM-7, an SMS can be up to 160 characters long, but using the Unicode character set reduces this limit to 70 characters. Furthermore, some characters under GSM-7 encoding — called escape characters — count as two characters since they are encoded in 14 bits. Review the “Message Details” Using the “Message Details” section, you can analyze the characters in your text. Standard GSM characters are displayed in grey, characters that count as two are shown in orange, and Unicode characters are displayed in red. This breakdown gives you greater control over your message, as well as the ability to change or replace any problematic characters.
