You want to run an SMS campaign using your iPhone contacts, but you’re not sure how to retrieve your contact database?

Find out below how to export your mobile phone contacts into a usable Excel database. All the data stored on your phone (last name, first name, company, etc.) can be exported in CSV format and used however you like.

How to Export Your iPhone Contacts to an Excel File?

Before sending your SMS campaign, you will need to export your iPhone contact database in vCard format (via the iCloud platform). Once you have this file, you can simply convert it into an Excel file using the Brotherli software, and your database will be ready to use. You will find the detailed steps to complete this process below.

Step 1: Create a vCard File

  • You need to get your contact list onto a computer. To do this, you must synchronize your contacts with iCloud.
  • Once that’s done, go to: http://icloud.com/, then select “Contacts“.
  • Your contact list will then open. You will need to click on the settings icon located at the bottom left of your screen. ⚙
  • Next, you will need to click on “Import a vCard“. This will allow you to retrieve your contacts into a database.
  • Then, save the file and click “OK” on the pop-up that appears.

Your vCard database has been created, but you can’t use it just yet. You need to change the format of your file by converting it to “CSV” format.

Step 2: Create a CSV File from the vCard File

To do this, you will need to use a file conversion tool such as http://labs.brotherli.ch/vcfconvert/ (free software).

  • Using the “Browse” tab, select the vCard file you just downloaded. For the format, select the one you want, namely “CSV“. It is labeled “Gmail (CSV)”.
  • Finally, confirm by clicking the “Convert” button and save your file.

Step 3: Import Your Contacts into Excel

  • Once that’s done, you need to open your file with Excel.
  • After opening it, go to the “Data” tab.
  • Select your data in the spreadsheet, then click “Text to Columns“.

  • Select the “Delimited” option, then click “Next“.

  • On the next page, specify the delimiters between the information provided by your table. You can select multiple different delimiters if needed, including Tab, Semicolon, Comma, Space, or other.

  • Finally, check the “General” option, then choose a destination cell in your Excel file. You can select cell A1 to position your contact table correctly. You can also choose a different sheet in your file.
  • Once done, click “Finish“.

  • You’re all done! Your database is ready to use.

All that’s left is to go to the SMS Partner sending platform and import your contact database with the variables you want to use! To do so, you can check out our video tutorial Import a Contact Database.

1. How do I transfer contacts from one iPhone to another iPhone?

To transfer your contacts from one iPhone to another, the simplest and most effective method is to use iCloud. First, make sure both iPhones are connected to a Wi-Fi network and that you are using the same Apple ID on both devices. On your old iPhone, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and enable the Contacts option. Wait for the synchronization to complete. On the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple ID, go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud, and also enable Contacts. Your contacts will appear automatically after a few moments.

2. Where are contacts stored on my iPhone?

On an iPhone, contacts are managed by the Contacts app, which generally syncs them with iCloud if that option is enabled. You can check where your contacts are saved by going to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and verifying whether the Contacts option is turned on. If it is, your contacts are stored in iCloud and synced across all your devices connected to that account.
If you don’t use iCloud, your contacts may be stored locally on the device or linked to another email account (such as Gmail or Outlook), depending on the configuration you chose when adding your accounts.

3. How can I tell whether my contacts are stored on my iPhone or my SIM card?

To check where your contacts are saved, start by opening the Contacts app on your iPhone. Tap a contact to view their details, then scroll down. If the contact is saved on your iPhone, you will see “iPhone” listed below the contact’s name. If it is saved on your SIM card, you will see “SIM” instead.
You can also check by going to Settings > Contacts > Default Account. If your iCloud account or another email account is selected as the default account, it is likely that most of your contacts are stored there. Finally, to view contacts saved directly on the SIM card, go to Settings > Contacts > Import SIM Contacts. If this option is available, it means there are contacts stored on your SIM card.
