Quelle est l'empreinte carbone d'un SMS ?

Sending a text message is fast, effective… and far less polluting than you might think! While every click and every data transmission has an environmental impact, SMS stands out as one of the most eco-friendly forms of communication. But what is the actual carbon footprint of a text message? Spoiler: it’s (very) light.

How Much CO₂ Does a Text Message Produce?

According to expert Mike Berners-Lee (brother of Tim, one of the inventors of the web), a single SMS emits around 0.014 g of CO₂. To put that in perspective:

  • 0.0001 km by car (barely 10 cm),
  • 1/300th of the footprint of a short email (4 g of CO₂ on average),
  • The equivalent of 0.00007 g of beef (nowhere near a steak).

Why so little?
A text message weighs an average of 140 bytes (compared to 20 KB for a basic email). Its journey through mobile networks is ultra-optimized, using shared infrastructure and minimal energy consumption. The energy cost of a text message is therefore… almost zero!

Comparison: SMS vs. Other Channels

Channel CO₂ Emission (per send) Concrete Example
SMS 0.014 g 1 minute of breathing at rest
Email (no attachment) 4 g 1 LED bulb on for 30 seconds
Streaming (1 hr) 36 g 3.5 km by car
Video call (1 hr) 150 g 15 km by car

Why Is SMS So Eco-Friendly?

  1. Lightweight infrastructure: Mobile networks (2G/3G/4G/5G) are designed to handle billions of text messages with maximum energy efficiency.
  2. No heavy data: Unlike emails or rich messages (photos, videos), a text message is plain text.
  3. Short lifespan: Stored for just a few days on servers, compared to years for some emails.

What If We Sent Millions of Them?

Even at scale, the impact remains low. 1 million SMS = 14 g of CO₂, which is equivalent to:

  • 70 km by car,
  • A French household’s electricity consumption… for 1 hour.

By comparison, 1 million emails (without attachments) = 4,000 kg of CO₂ (285,000 times more!).
