Are you using Premium SMS campaigns and would like to send a long SMS of more than 160 characters? This is possible with concatenated SMS (also known as long SMS)!

The basic rules of SMS

An SMS contains 160 characters. This rule was established by international carriers. All characters count as 1 character, except for certain special characters that simply cannot be sent and will be replaced by similar-looking characters (see FAQ).

What is a concatenated SMS?

When sending an SMS of more than 160 characters, the platform will send a concatenated SMS. Indeed, the billing unit is based on 160 characters.

When a message exceeds 160 characters, the messaging system automatically splits the text into multiple parts. Each segment contains up to 153 characters, as part of the space is reserved for header information used to reassemble the complete message.
The recipient’s phone seamlessly reassembles the separately sent segments, displaying a single, fluid message (see table below).

Number of characters Number of SMS
0 – 160 1
161 – 306 2
306 – 459 3
459 – 612 4
612 – 765 5

Businesses use concatenated SMS for communications requiring detailed information, such as professional notifications or marketing messages. However, each segment is billed as a separate SMS, which may result in additional costs.

Please note: the limit set by the platform is 960 characters. Nevertheless, we can process sends exceeding this number, but we advise against it. For an impactful SMS, the message should be short and to the point.
